Ei mina ei mõista, mille eest see raamat nii häid hinnanguid on saanud?! Ma suutsin 200 leheküljest kusagil 50 läbi lugeda ja siis sai jaks otsa. No igav on, kole igav. Mingi väike siblimine ju käib, aga kõik see on külatähtsusega tegevus ja ei näi millegi suuremani viivat. Kogu see trall käib ühe leidlapse ümber, kes näib veidi erilist sorti olevat...

Maailm, mida McAuley kujutab, on veider. Elatakse kenas asjalikus keskajas kusagil ühe suure jõe kaldal, 10 000 eri liiki inimesi, imetletakse taevas Galaktikat, teatakse, mis on geenid ja et kõik need rahvad on millalgi kunstlikult loodud, kosmoselende ja võõrolendeid teatakse ning räägitakse nõidadest ja tatsatakse vibudega ringi...

Poleks ma vahepeal mõjalt natuke tausta uurinud, poleks ma igasugu mõistetest üldse midagi aru saanud. Nüüd veidi sai, aga mis abi sellestki. Vahepeal lugedes tuli täiesti arusaamatu seos Victor Hugo "Hüljatuga" pähe...
