Ten thousand years ago, a single alien super-ship survived a desperate battle. The vessel's dying crew set the AI on automatic to defend the smashed rubble of their planet. Legend has it the faithful ship continues to patrol the empty battlefield, obeying its last order throughout the lonely centuries.

On the run from killers, Maddox searches for a group of talented misfits. He seeks Keith Maker, a drunken ex-strikefighter ace, Doctor Dana Rich the clone thief stuck on a prison planet and Lieutenant Valerie Noonan, the only person to have faced the New Men in battle and survived to tell about it.
Maddox has to find a place hidden in the Beyond and bring back a ship no one can enter. If he fails, the New Men will replace the old. If he succeeds, humanity might just have a fighting chance…

Kanadas sündinud ja nüüd Californias elava kirjaniku hiljuti ilmunud igati korralik militaarulmeromaan.
Raamatu süžee pole küll eriti originaalne ega uudne - inimestest kõigiti üleolev vaenlane, "mission impossible" mida asub täitma veidi salapärane kapten koos oma geniaalsete ning elu hammasrataste vahele jäänud raskestiallutatavate meeskonnakaaslastega, inimkonda hävingust päästa võiv müütiline artefakt (ammu väljasurnud tulnukate võimas sõjalaev) mis tuleb iga hinna eest kätte saada - aga loo tegelaskujud olid huvitavad ning kirjutatud oli raamat samuti hästi ja kaasahaaravalt.
Lugesin loo üsna ühe hooga läbi ja viiega ei lase teda hinnata vaid originaalsuse vähesus ja mõned (minu arvates) lahtiseks jäänud teemaliinid. Nii et neli.
PS. Minu kurdetud lahtised otsad tulid ilmselt sellest, et raamatule ilmus järg. Nii et seda mu kriitikanoolt ei tule enam arvestada. Ja ilmselt kui oleksin seda järje tulekut lugemise ajal teadnud, olnuks hinne raamatule vist 5, nüüd aga hinnet muutma enam ka ei hakka... (5.2.2015)
