Tegemist on Bujoldi esimese Vorkosigani sarja raamatuga, kus saab alguse Miles Vorkosigani vanemate lugu. Cordelia Naismith on laskunud oma uurimislaevaga planeedile, mida ta kavatseb oma teadlastest koosneva meeskonna abil lähemalt tundma õppida. Ta on parajasti koos laeva botaanikuga planeedi taimestikust proove võtmas, kui nende laagriplatsi ründab Barrayari laev. Veidi hiljem leiab Cordelia end silmitsi Barrayari sõjaväelasega ning peab tunnistama oma allajäämist. Tema vangistaja nimetab end kapten Aral Vorkosiganiks ning nad peavad kahekesi läbi tegema ränga teekonna, et saada kätte peidetud tagavarad, mis võiksid päästa nende elud. Katsumuste käigus toimub muutus nende suhetes ning kui Cordelia planeedilt lahkub, on tekkinud nihked ka tema endistes arusaamades.

Mina lugesin siiski võõrkeelset raamatut. Kust ma selle eestikeelse raamatu ikka kätte oleks saanud: raamatukogus ma ju juba aastaid enam ei käi ning  isegi kui see raamat meil poes saada oleks, siis sellise meie müügihinna eest ma seda ikkagi ostma ei hakkaks.

Kindlasti on raamatut tema eestikeelse kättesaadavuse tõttu paljudes kohtades paljude inimeste poolt juba väga põhjalikult arvustatud ja hinnatud, nii et mina lisan oma arvamuse vaid siia ja hästi lühidalt.
On hea raamat küll! Lausa väga hea! Mitte et ta täiesti ideaalne oleks, aga mulle ta meeldis. Nii et panen kõhkluseta hindeks viie.
