Inimesed avastasid paarsada aastat tagasi Marsil mingi muistse proteaanlaste rassi punkri hulga väärtusliku infoga. See avas inimestele tee kosmosesse. Esimene inimeste kokkupuude teiste mõistuslike olenditega viis muidugi kohe sõjani. Sõda rahustatakse siiski teiste võõrrasside poolt maha ja inimesed liituvad teiste rassidega.
Inimeste Allianss saadab leitnant David Andersoni juhtumit uurima. Ja uurimine käib suure madina saatel, kuhu mitmed rassid ja nende huvid segatud on.
Nii et tegemist on suure madinaga ja mingit sügavat sisu loos ei ole. Aga samas ei ole tegu ka mitte kõige nürima pliiatsiga omasuguste seas. Lugeda võis ja kolm tuleb hindeks ära küll.
